Why Is A New Pet Not The Best Gift To Give This Holiday?

The Critter Trail.

Christmas Morning will be here in no time.  A new pet is at the top of your friend’s or family member’s wish list.  Yes, the idea of seeing them jump and shriek with delight at the sight of a new pet may sound great, but in reality it may not be love at first sight.

A Christmas pet may be a big mistake. Why?  Holidays are a stressful time for everyone (mostly happy, fun stress), with places to go and things to do.  The arrival of a new pet will change your household routine not just for Christmas day but also for years to come.  Bringing home a new pet will always involve lots of thought and planning.  It’s a big decision.

Combining the stress of the holidays with the stress on an animal coming to a new home doesn’t make for an ideal situation.

If you know you want to give a pet as a gift, we always recommend giving the supplies for Christmas, then getting the pet when life settles down a bit.  This is a great solution for lots of reasons:  it takes away the added stress of the holidays, it lets the person receiving the gift pick the pet that they love the most, and it gives you something to wrap that you can put under the tree.

Think of little Susie who REALLY wants a hamster Christmas.  She has been begging you for months, spends all her time researching the care of hamsters and can’t wait until she has one of her own.  You want to surprise her on Christmas and head to the pet store, pick out what it needs and think the brown furry one is really cute.  So you bring it home, then have to hide it for a week in the basement (my parents actually did this for me with gerbils when I was seven!).  Susie is really excited Christmas morning, but why did you get the brown one?  She was really hoping for a white one…oops!  Now if you had given her the supplies that she could unwrap, along with a promise to go pick out her favorite hamster next week.  You have made her excitement last so much longer!

By having the whole family or an individual pick out their pet, it will create a stronger lasting bond with the pet.

My Pet Store And More can help you get ready for any future pet you are planning to add to your family.  Whether it’s a new hamster, parrot, reptile, dog, cat or fish tank, we can show you the supplies you will need to start with, what care and maintenance to expect for the future and we will even teach you how to pick out a healthy pet!
