How To Stop Your Cat From Scratching Up Your Couch

Scratch Tunnel.

Is your cat in the midst of destroying your entire furniture collection? Don’t pull your hair out, there’s a solution.

A cat scratching his or her claws into people and things is a natural behavior. Furniture is especially appealing to cats because the felines can fabric shred with their claws.

If you are searching for ways to curb your cat’s efforts to claw your furniture, forget about it. The reasons cats scratch items is to keep their claws in shape and exercise their shoulders, legs and paws. It is also a way for your cat to market his or her territory.

Rather than try to curb this natural behavior, you should try to modify the behavior.

Keep Off Spray.

Here is how you can keep your furniture in mint condition and your cat happy:

  1. Purchase a scratching post or climbing tree for your cat. A sturdy scratching post will keep your cat entertained and prevent your cat from scratching furniture items such as couch arms and table legs. The scratching post should be tall enough for your cat to comfortably stretch and scratch. Fiber rope makes for an excellent scratching post. The scratching post should also be sturdy for climbing. You may also want to buy a scratching pad so your cat has a flat scratching surface available at the home.

  2. Make every surface you don’t want your cat to scratch unpleasant for your cat. For example, you could put double side tape on furniture items. Cats dislike scratching their claws on sticky surfaces (removable double tape). Best of all your furniture decorations can remain attractive.

  3. Have you cat’s claws trimmed.

  4. Buy catnip and rub or spray it on the scratching post and scratching pad to make it more inviting to your cat than your furniture.

  5. Spray your cat with water before he/she starts the scratching and mid-scratch as well. It is a harmless action and will deter your cat from scratching your furniture.

  6. Buy plastic furniture covers.

  7. Use repellants they are a safe and easy way to keep cats away from certain areas or furniture.

  8. Motion detecting spray deterrents will keep you cat away from a designated area.
