How to Determine If Your Kids are Ready For a Pet

Are the kids pouting and repeatedly asking one particular question? You know the question. ‘Can we have a pet?’

It is hard to say no to adorable children when they beg for a family pet. But are your children ready to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet?

It’s no surprise that children are extremely fascinated with pets. A pet can be great for your children to have as a new addition to your family because a pet can teach kids about being responsible, showing empathy to others while learning about the importance of love and companionship.

Your children can even reap the health benefits that come with a pet such as controlling high blood pressure better.

Before you make a final decision on whether the kids should have a family pet or not, you need to ask yourself and your children some questions.

  1. Can you take on the added responsibility of having a pet in your household? A family pet could mean modifying your lifestyle to accommodate his or her needs. A pet could need just as much care as a new baby. You will be dedicating years of your life to caring for a pet. Dogs on average can live up to 14 years. Guinea pigs have a life span of three years. Pick a pet right for you and your family’s time management and budget.

  2. Do you know what the monthly cost of caring for your pet will be? Pets have different needs – cages, bedding, pet food, pet toys and more have to be accounted. You can’t forget veterinary care expenses.

  3. How will you go about teaching your kids how to care for a pet? Children as young as three have the ability to assist in pet care. Children will need to be taught how to feed the family pet (no removing or touching food while the pet eats. Children have to learn what is a healthy size meal for the family pet and more.). It is important to know that the majority of children will not be prepared to be the primary care takers until they are teenagers. This is why you, as the parent, will need to oversee most pet care tasks.

  4. Do your children have allergies to particular pets? You can identify whether your children have pet allergies if they experience wheezing, skin rashes, and eye irritation around different kinds of pets. If your children like a certain type of pet a neighbor, friend or family member owns, have your children interact with the pet to see if they experience allergy symptoms. 25 percent of the population are allergic to cats and dogs.
