How To Create A Dog Friendly Garden

Spring is here! If you are a dog owner designing a home garden this spring, you need to make the garden dog friendly. This article will provide you information on how to make the most attractive, safe dog friendly garden.

Just because your dog may interact with your garden does not mean you cannot have a lush garden.

Your dog and your garden can peacefully co-exist.

To start designing a dog friendly garden, you should designate a play area for your dog and a nap area for your dog within the garden.

The play area and nap area can be designated with wood fencing, iron fencing, or stone blocks.

The purpose of this is to help your dog get into a routine of playing in one area and cooling off in another area.

We highly recommend you lay down some soil or sand in the play area to prevent your dog from running any of your landscape. Cover the dog play area and nap area with soil or sand and top this layer with leaves, bark chips or mulch for the best results. It will be similar to a playground area for children.

You can promote your dog to frequently use the play area and nap area by hiding his or her favorite dog toys within the designated dog friendly area. You may even want to put a treat release puzzle toy in the areas as well so your dog can have plenty of fun.

As for the nap area, consider designing a cooling pit for your dog to prevent him or her from overheating on warm spring and summer days. You may even want to add a kiddy pool to the nap area to help your dog cool down on warm days.

How To Design Your Dog Friendly Garden

As for planting your flowerbeds, vegetables and greenery always build a barrier between your flowers/vegetables/greenery and your dog with wood, decorative brick or decorative stone. If you do not prefer raised beds in your garden design, you can always use container gardens.

More importantly, do not put plants that are toxic to dogs in your garden. Some vegetables you should definitely avoid putting in your garden are eggplants, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and rhubarb. Also never put foxglove, deadly nightshade or larkspur in your garden. These are deadly to dogs.

As for garden pathways for your dog, go for gravel, mulch or loose bark to prevent your dog from wearing down your grass.

And do not forget to use non-toxic gardening products. Dogs can be hospitalized or die from ingesting fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides.
