Rabbit Care: 7 Ways To Care For Your Spring Bunny

Rabbit Hutch.

Spring is coming! What better way to spring into Spring than with a new pet rabbit! Domestic rabbits are cute, fun and loving. This article will provide you essential rabbit care tips to keep your bunny happy and healthy this Spring and beyond.

Domestic rabbits need extra special care during Spring and Fall because the blend of warm days and chilly nights make rabbits very vulnerable. It is challenging for domestic rabbits to adapt to change.

Rabbits have less of challenge dealing with winter and summer weather because their bodies are highly tolerable to constant extremes rather than changing environments.

Here are ways to protect your bunny from constant changes and decrease his/her stress level:

  • Increase ventilation on warm Spring days. Covering the northern windows of your bunny’s shelter with tarps and any southern windows with plastic can create a great greenhouse effect for your bunny.
  • Use hay in your bunny’s solid bottom cage to reduce stress levels. Small and medium rabbits should have a cage that is at least 4ft wide, 2 ft deep and 2 feet tall. If you have a very large rabbit, you will need a change that is at least double that size. We recommend purchasing a water bottle that attaches to the bunny cage rather than a water bowl. The bottle stays cleaner than the water bowl.
  • Purchase ceramic or metal food bowls. Bunnies chew plastic and you will want a rabbit food bowl that will last.
  • Buy chew toys for your bunny to maintain healthy teeth.
  • Use a soft grooming brush on your bunny.
  • Purchase a litter box for your bunny. Yes, your bunny can be potty trained to properly use the litter box. Litter boxes absorb ammonia really well from rabbit urine to keep the cage environment very clean.
  • Stick to pelleted rabbit food.

The ideal rabbit habitat is one that provides shelter against wind, rain, cold drafts and hot sun.  Your rabbit should not be exposed frequently to temperatures above 80 degrees.

You can get a pet rabbit from an animal shelter, rescue group, reliable breeder or pet store.
