How To Keep Your Dog Warm and Safe From Arctic Wind Chill

Pet Coat.

This week is a cold one as arctic air plummets temperatures throughout the northeast. It is expected that the temperatures will continue to drop lower.

The temperatures haven’t been this low in the past 10 years for the northeast and the subzero wind chills are very dangerous for you and your pet.

How do you protect your pet from the freezing temperatures?

My Pet Store and More is here to give you a few pointers on how to best protect your pet from the harsh weather.

One way to protect your pet from the cold temperature is to bring he or she indoors frequently to provide your pet the appropriate warmth. Puppies, elderly dogs and sick dogs are the most vulnerable to artic wind chill.

When the weather gets too cold or wet for your dog, the body temperature of your pet drastically drops. This is very dangerous because internal organs can possibly shut down and your dog could die. Your pet should always have a means to get warm when the weather is 45 degrees or below.

Heated Bed.

The following are essential items for keeping your pet warm for the winter:

  1. Buy pet jackets and sweaters for your dog. Not only is the pet clothing stylish but also it will provide your pet that extra warmth. The best pet clothes for winter are those that feature waterproof nylon coverings.
  2. Purchase pet boots. Remember a pet such as a dog regulates body temperature through the soles of his/her feet and the tongue. Not only will the booties keep your furry friend warm but the booties will also protect your pet from salt and other ice melt products. Proper winter paw care is crucial to the well being of your pet.
  3. Provide your pet an outdoor shelter such as a doghouse. The doghouse will provide your dog the perfect amount of insulation for those long hours outdoors. The shelter will also shield your dog from hypothermia.
  4. Provide a dog bed. We highly recommend bedding for the doghouse to keep your pet off the cold floor and protect your pet from the cold draft. Cold surfaces and drafts put your dog in danger because they pull heat from the body and chill the joints.
  5. If your pet needs to be regularly outside, make dog food and water easily accessible. This includes keeping pet food warm at room temperature. This should be done to prevent your dog from losing valuable body heat that would be needed when digesting cold meals. As for water, fresh drinking water should be available at all times to prevent your dog from becoming dehydrated. A water bowl de-icer is a must have for this type of winter weather. If you do not want a water de-icer go for a heated water bowl.
