How To Prevent Dog Dehydration

Warm weather days are here to stay for the next few months. Your dog will be eager to enjoy the beautiful weather with you. As a dog owner, you will need to follow dog safety precautions to keep your dog hydrated this spring and summer. Heat is a killer.

From dog training to playing, it’s important to keep your dog cool and well hydrated. For dogs, water is just as important as dog food because water dissolves and carries nutritional sources throughout the body. Water helps with your dog’s digestion, waste filtering, body temperature regulation and more.

If a dog is not well hydrated he/she could die from kidney failure and heart complications. It only takes a dog losing 10 percent of his/her water to die from dehydration. Remember, 80 percent of your dog’s body is water.

Portable Waterbowl

Here are some essentials to know about canine hydration:

  • House dogs around 50 pounds should have at least five cups of water everyday. When your house dog is active, you should give him/her at least 12 cups of water.

  • Dogs become dehydrated for two main reasons: 1) Canines lose water from respiration (about 23 percent moisture loss). 2) Canines lose water from urinating (about a 70 percent water loss).

How should you serve water to your dog?

Always do your best to provide your dog clean, fresh, portable water. If you are providing your dog water in a dog water bowl, make sure the bowl is clean of harmful bacteria every serving and algae free.

Purchase a dog bowl that’s at least twice the amount your dog will need daily to assure your dog has plenty of water. You may even want to investment in a water feeder to provide your dog a steady water supply.

To keep the water bowl as clean as possible, purchase a bottle-brush to properly scrub the water bowl inside and out.

What are common signs of dog dehydration?

  • Dry gums

  • Darkened Eyes

  • Lethargy

Make sure your dog has water prior to active play/ exercise, during play/ exercise, and after play/exercise. Your dog loses water from the nose, tongue, and paws.
